The year of climate action – What our team is doing for the planet

The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. This summit is bringing parties together to accelerate and to commit to urgent global climate action.

But each of us has a part to play, and 2021 is a critical year. We at Product Guru, as a tech team based in Glasgow, are taking action. We are a small team currently working remotely, and our carbon print is low. However, as we grow, we are working on tangible steps to take as a business to achieve net zero goals.

The science is clear: as the world warms, sea levels are rising, animal and plant species are becoming extinct, prolonged droughts are causing major issues for many countries, and extreme weather events are more frequent and catastrophic than ever before.

As hard as it is to imagine what we as individuals can do to help, we must all try our best to protect our planet. Our lives depend on it. That’s why, in the run up to the summit, we’ve been encouraging conversations around the importance of fighting climate change amongst our team and networks. We know that individual actions matter!

Because we know that individual actions matter, we are sharing here some actions that we are taking individually, hopefully to encourage others to also make changes and have an impact.

Here's what Product Guru members have done/are doing to fight climate change

"A few years ago, I had a think about everyday life adjustments, any positive steps I could make for the planet. One simple, yet powerful step, was to switch my search engine for Ecosia. Working for a digital start-up and from a laptop, means that I am planting trees while working! So far, in the last six months, my searches have resulted in 3,466 planted trees, and counting!" - Julie Houdin-McAveety

“My husband and I joined the COP26 homestay network to offer a space for free in our home to accommodate activists, policy makers and visitors from the climate justice movement during COP26. We are only a 10 minute walk from the COP26 conference centre, and we are happy to host climate change fighters. We are also avid cyclists and walkers. We have a car which is only and strictly for emergency use!” - Caterina Bassano

"To tackle climate change, as a family we try to explore the great outdoors as often as possible! This includes many (many) dog walks, cycling our little legs off and gorge walking along the rivers with the kids!" - Jenna McIntosh

"I don’t buy any plastic bottles ever, and I am very committed to using my recycling bins!" - Euan Harrington

"I love animals and protecting the environment. I'm a vegetarian for the planet!" - Alex Hughes

"The effect of having so many clothes on the environment is extremely high. I get much of my clothing from secondhand shops to help tackle the issues of waste and climate change" - Chris Costello

"I have made changes to my diet to help fight climate change, including veggie snacks and oat milk; which, by the way, is a game changer!" - Martin Carlin

"In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket."

David Suzuki
